Ultrasound
An ultrasound probe is placed right on the patients skin and a gel is used to get good skin contact.
The probe sends out sound waves and receives sound waves (echo). The sound frequency is 2-10 MHz. The farther the organ is from the probe the lower the frequency chosen.
The organs are seen "live" in greytones. A circular blood vessel is almost black, serous fluid is black, fat becomes white. Diameters of the structures can be measured electronically.
Two conditions obstructing good pictures . . Air and bone between the probe and the examined organ may obstruct the view. Air makes the picture completely white.
The pictures are oriented so that up on the picture is closest to the skin and left is upwards or to the right on the patient. Ultrasound is a dynamic examination, depending on the examinator. The examinations is used in many connections and can be used together with Doppler examination
