Chest X-ray
Images in both projections are obtained with patient in upright position holding the breath in maximal inspiration. The front image is taken with the image disk in front, thereby the direction of the x-ray is from back to front ie. postero-anterior direction (PA image).
The direction of the x-ray beam in the lateral projection may vary and the direction does not have any significant impact on how the image looks like.
To verify that the front image is taken right the spine processes should be centered between the medial ends of the clavicles. In the head-feet direction the top of the lungs should be seen 1-2 cm above the clavicles.
When exposure is opimal the spine should barely be seen through the heart. The lateral image should demonstrate the vertebrae.
During deep inspiraton the diaphragms are at the level of 11th posterior rib at the front image.
